A place to keep track of info, links, and my thoughts on composition and rhetoric, teaching and learning, and life in general, while I work on my PhD at the University of South Florida.

4 C's San Antonio
I'm at 4 C's right now and just heard a presentation on blogging by Dennis Jerz. He's actually keeping some empirical data on the blogs he's set up for his classrooms at Seton Hill. His blog discusses sort of what he was talking about. Jerz did ask who else was blogging and using them in the classroom and out of about the nine people standing around only myself and two others raised his hand. We present tomorrow on the pedagogical and professional purpose of blogging.
Back in Town
So I'm back to teaching and grading after a really nice spring break. I got to see a little bit of Boston, a little bit of Baltimore, a little bit of D.C., and a lot of Perryville, MD. I also stopped by Gettysburg. Well researchblogs.org is sort of up. It's going to be very cool wants it really gets going. The idea is that people working on ETDs will be able to blog together about their research and also about the ETD process. Also professors working with students who write ETDs and librarians will be able to blog there as well. I need to start working on our film for 4Cs and the call for papers and a pamphlet on researchblogs, plus as always there's the grading.
Missing clock
I walked into my office this afternoon and just noticed that my desk clock is missing. I'm hoping no one stole, but that maybe my office mate borrowed it while she was teaching. If not I'm going to be a little pissed since I really want it back.
Annotated Bib from Hell
Got your attention, right? I've been trying to buckle down an write this annotated bib, but have little desire or interest. Anyways while looking around for blog research and such I just found this blog called Seb's Open Research. Basically, the blog collects the musings of other blogs on research. One of the entries in this blog that was particularly interesting was a Creative Technology Curriculum developed by Geoffrey Rockwell. Although, much of what he's developing doesn't apply to comp, I think to a certain extent his curriculum heads in directions comp may well delve into as literarcy needs change.
Presentation for Symposium on 21st Century Technologies
Well, today I'm presenting with Daisy, Tricia, and Doc Mox at the symposium on blogging. We're here from 11-2 to discuss blogs. I'll definitely be discussing motime and the use of instant messaging as well as the blogging community and the development of professional voice. We'll see how it goes.
Good News
Doc Mox's and my proposal has been accepted by the NDLTD for their conference in June. Now I have to just talk to Terry and get that research blog up and running at ETDguide.
CAKE
I've got a lot to do this week. Grading (a continuous exercise in futility), preparing for a presentation on Blogging for the Symposium of 21st Century Tech.
Using Weblogs in the Composition Classroom
Weblogging offers teachers a unique way to engage students in the Composition classroom. As a tool, blogs allow students to post and archive their work in a way that is easy to use and access. As a genre, blogs offer students new rhetorical situations in which to communicate their ideas. Our work explores the various metaphors applicable to blogs -- blog as journal, blog as news column, blog as annotated bibliography, blog as meeting place -- in order to more fully realize the potential blogs have for preparing students for advanced learning and professional writing situations.
And I've got a midterm to write, trying to finish a creative non-fic piece on pigeons, and an annotated bib, but I'll be honest that I'm really looking forward to Spring Break. I just bought my tickets for a Cake concert in Hollywood, FL this Sat and I can't wait to go. After that I'm off to Baltimore, Washington DC, and Boston. It's going to be a great trip.
